The chamber of commerce sat down with Scott Andrew Mills, who started
Maverick Insurance in 2012. Scott is one of our dedicated board members who ensures that we have a thriving business community here in Lake County. Scott Andrew Mills was recently awarded with the
NOACC Bright Star distinction.
Q: What gets you out of bed in the morning?
A: Another opportunity to meet new people and to spend time with my lovely wife. The opportunity to grow professionally. Every day is a new learning experience. Every day above ground is a great day.
Q: What three words would you use to describe your role?
A: Principle. Agent. Adviser.
Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
A: Craft beer and good red wine and dark chocolate.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Variety – no two minutes are the same. Every single day is different.
Q: What are your biggest professional challenges?
A: Employees – there is trouble finding them. Right now, I’m looking for producers. I want people that want to make money and want to work and put the time in to be successful.
Q: What was your first job?
A: Paper route – first time being an entrepreneur
My first job with a W2 was as a dishwasher and busser at local pizza joint – DaVinci’s on Mayfield Road in Lyndhurst.
Q: How do you define success?
A: Our children. They’ve all grown up ad are good citizens. Two are Army officers and one is a 2nd grade teacher.
Q: Do you have a favorite movie or book?
A: Favorite book is the Bible. (Basic Instruction Before Leaving the Earth)
Favorite movie is TOP GUN. (Maverick Insurance – get it?)
Q: If you could change one thing about your job, what would that be?
A: No more email! It’s just gotten to be a crutch. No one talks to each other anymore.
Q: If you were on death row, what would you last meal be?
A: Big filet mignon and lobster tail.
Q: What are your hopes for your industry?
A: That is remains an in-person business. That it doesn’t go to completely online.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time and time away from work?
A: I love yard work. But before that, riding my Harley. I take it out east with my wife.
Q: What is on your bucket list?
A: A LOT. I keep my bucket list on my phone and update it now and then. The most unattainable thing on my list is to ride on Air Force.
Q: What is the first concert you attended?
A: Michael Stanley at Blossom.
Q: What is a piece of advice for all of our chamber members and potential chamber members about getting the most out of your membership?
A: Don’t just join…you gotta belong!! You only get out of it what you put into it. Get involved.
